Not that Cassian was big on self-care anyway. Case in point: normally Cassian had tremendous difficulty sleeping, deeply or at all. Now, perhaps because it was the only bearable way to pass the time—perhaps to make up for a lifetime of vigilance and deprivation—perhaps because, even when worried for her out of his mind, he felt safer and more calm at her side—he had indeed fallen asleep. His head in the crook of one arm; the hand of the other holding firm on hers.

He was dreaming of her when he felt her gentle hand in his hair. Maybe that was why he didn't wake up the way he usually did—whole body startling up and ready to strike. Instead, he only raised his head. His eyes fell immediately, searching but warm, on her.

Then he started, but only slightly, more upright, and his hand tightened on hers.]
