It was moments like these that Jyn allowed herself to believe, however momentarily, that things were going to be okay. Because the thought of not having this was almost too much to bear. "What now, Captain? Take a nap while we can?"
"Might as well, they probably went me to work on the droids through the afternoon and into the evening," he said. He wouldn't be surprised if he worked into the next morning.
"Then a few hours of rest will do you good. And, if you want some assistance, you've got me. It's not like I had anything more pressing to do tonight, anyway." That, and she'd learned the hard way that it was beginning to sleep alone now.
If she was a little slower to get undressed, surely it was understandable - as it so happens, Jyn really liked to watch, and now was no exception. But eventually, she was as prepared to get some rest as she was ever going to be.
He got under the covers, pulling Jyn's side down for her. When she got into bed next to him, he wrapped his arm around her waist. "Thank you. I'm sure you're not tired." It was just past noon after all.
He was right. She wasn't exactly tired, but she wasn't going to pass up the opportunity for a few hours of uninterrupted rest, especially if it meant being able to do so while all tangled up with each other. Jyn settled, and smiled, and shrugged. "I'm sure I'll manage."
He chuckled, then, because they were so clearly head over heels for each other that even lying next to each other in silence was enough for them - not that anything would be enough for them, but that any time they spent together was precious and not something they wanted to take for granted.
Because they were both very well aware that nothing was guaranteed, especially time, even the littlest, quietest moments were both appreciated and enjoyed to their fullest. "Get your rest", Jyn murmured, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek, "I'll be here when you wake up."
He half smiled and turned his head to kiss her properly. Reaching over, he pressed a button on a pad by their bed and turned out the lights, pulling up the blankets and closing his eyes.
As difficult as it was to keep things light and not distract from the task at hand, Jyn managed admirably enough. Once the lights went out, it was easy to settle and relax all the further, to close her eyes and revel in having this time to do nothing at all but rest with each other. Before she knew it, she'd be asleep.
A couple of hours later, Cassian's comlink started beeping on the table in the corner where he'd left it. He quickly got up, years of being on-call having conditioned him to be a light sleep, and went to answer it.
"I'll be right there," he said after listening to the person on the other end. He started to pull on his clothes.
Jyn wasn't far behind - if the shifting of the bed and the loss of her partner weren't enough, the beeping definitely would have been. She didn't attempt to dress yet, but stood and stretched and yawned.
"You can come," he said as he sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled on his boots. "It'll be boring, though." He smiled and then went to grab his comlink.
"I hardly think that's true at all", she laughed, quick to pull on her own clothing, as well - pants, shirt, vest, boots, done. "You know there's no other place I'd rather be."
"C'mon." He went and kissed her cheek, squeezing her hand a bit before letting go and then going to open the door.
Once they left, they went out down the hall and outside to where all the ships were stationed. The U-Wing in question was already being unloaded, five pristine droids that looked exactly like Kay were being carted off to a computer lab. Cassian followed.
She certainly appreciated the gesture - seeing as how the rest of the day, and probably most of the night was going to be spent working on the new droids. At least she'd be there to assist - hopefully she wouldn't be more of a hindrance.
Again, she followed along at a respectable distance, although she did stop in her tracks to see the droids, identical to Kay, but not ... not nearly the same at all. And these droids would never take his place, but who knew who they could become.
Jyn sighed, and followed along, and hoped that the reprogramming went off without a hitch.
Once they got to the lab, Cassian hooked up the first one to a tablet of sorts and started undoing and going through all its Empire programming. Each of the droids had come in completely offline.
"You can have a seat there," Cassian said to Jyn. Without looking up, he nodded toward a stool.
Immediately, he set to work, and Jyn didn't really know what to do without getting in the way, which was the last thing that she wanted. So, she sat, and watched for a bit, and eventually -
He was in the middle of running diagnostics when she finally spoke up. Lifting his head, he turned to look at her, almost forgetting that she had been sitting there next to him.
It was a big job, and Jyn hadn't expected otherwise. Besides, when it was needed, she could keep quiet and keep to herself at the same time. But she'd feel useless if she wasn't doing something, so she was grateful for the suggestion.
"Of course. They'll be like new in no time", she answered, getting up in order to search for cleaning supplies.
Well, that made her work all the easier, and with her time being dedicated to just the one droid, she could make sure that it looked as good as new when all was said and done. From top to bottom, she'd be as thorough as possible.
By the time she would come back, Cassian would be back to working, hunched over a tablet as he waited to reprogram after the diagnostics. It wouldn't be long now - with this droid, he'd be back to going on assignments, leaving Jyn behind most likely.
And after this, if everything went to plan, probably sooner than either of them would like. But that was life, and that was the time they lived in, and that was what had to be done, and Jyn didn't want to think about that at the moment, so she devoted every bit of attention that she could toward getting the droid cleaned, and making sure the joints were oiled, ensuring that it looked the best it could.
It wouldn't for very long, of course, but that was a given, knowing what sorts of things it would soon be tasked to do, and knowing some of the places it might soon be sent to, along with Cassian, and all she could hope was that it took care of him as well as Kay, that she could trust it to do so.
