[He says nothing to her first statement, only smirks in return.
But at her second statement, he squeezes her hand and then let's go. While they haven't made any kind of statement about their relationship, he knows it's made the rounds in terms of gossip. But they're making sure it doesn't interfere with work.]
[Because she's right, and she'll silently gloat over that knowledge. And ... her total enjoyment of being a distraction. It is a necessity, after all, even in times like this.
Although she isn't very happy at having to let go, she knows that it's probably best. It's pretty obvious that they're together, since they're sharing quarters now and all, but it can't hurt to maintain a distance between them when they're not safe within the privacy of this room.
Nobody else needs to know what goes on behind closed doors. Nobody else needs to know what they mean to each other.] Ready, then.
C'mon. [He gives her one last smile before leading her out, the door sliding closed behind them.
People are making their way to the cafeteria so they join the throng. He can feel Jyn at his side, but he doesn't reach out to touch her, he just assumes she'll keep up despite the crowd.]
[Jyn is quick to follow, and to ensure a respectable distance between them, even as they're squeezed closer and closer from all the others doing the same thing, heading in the same direction. Even if they get separated, she'll find him, she's got no doubt about that.]
When the hallway finally opened up into a large room with a line to get food on one side and tables lined up in rows, filling the large empty space in the middle, there was a lot more breathing room. Cassian glanced behind his shoulder once, seeing Jyn not too far, he assumed again that she would find him in the crowd as he lined up to get food with the others.
She was small and slight and quick enough to slip into empty spaces, ensuring that she's not too far behind Cassian - at least not far enough behind to lose visual contact. He'd most certainly find a seat first, but he'd save one for her, so she wasn't too worried about that. Jyn even held a short conversation with a mechanic she'd helped with some repairs a few days prior. And when it was time to fill her tray, just a few quick choices, more concentrated on rejoining Cassian than anything else.
It wasn't long before she slid into her seat and settled, offering a smile before she prepared to tuck into lunch. But she was distracted by the question and glanced back at Cassian, frowning. "... Bored? No, no I'm not bored. After Saw's, I just - I never stayed in one place for very long. Why?"
He shrugged at her reply, using a spoon to move around some sort of bright orange mush on his tray. "I'm just wondering is all...I know the Alliance isn't sure what to do with you yet so I was wondering if you needed something to do during the day."
Now that Cassian was almost all the way healed, his commanding officers had started including him in meetings and debriefs again. He wouldn't be surprised if he got a new assignment in the next few weeks, if not days.
"There is always something to be done", she answered, picking at her sweet roll distractedly. "I help with repairs, I've volunteered in Medbay. I ... go where an extra hand is needed. I'm not bored ... for the most part."
She knew that the time would come that assignments would come, she just wasn't expecting it quite so soon. She'd also hate to assume that she'd be involved in those assignments, but she certainly held that hope.
He nodded. "If you do get bored, there are ways you can rise in terms of rank." That would surely give her more to do if she had assignments, albeit small, but in time, if she wanted, she could become an Intelligence Officer like him, although, she had a somewhat hard time being inconspicuous.
"Or you can do something else - like study medicine."
"I hadn't really thought about that", she admitted, shrugging softly. "But I suppose it makes sense. If I'm to stay, then I should be of some use, shouldn't I?"
Honestly? She'd sort of assumed that when assignments arrived, she'd be able to go with Cassian. But that wasn't always going to be feasible.
He could certainly advocate for her to come on his missions, but he'd been told by Draven he'd be getting a new droid soon to aid him in his missions. Cassian wasn't sure how he felt about that yet - K2's "death" still hurt when he thought about it.
"You should - everyone should. We need all hands on deck," he said.
But that was hardly a guarantee that she'd be allowed to. A new droid would be helpful, but it also wouldn't be Kay, and that, she knew, was a difficult thought to deal with. "Alright", she conceded, popping a bit of the roll into her mouth, and chewing slowly. "It's what's best."
He smiled a little and started to eat again in a comfortable silence. "Despite the war," he said, speaking up after a few minutes. "I want you to be happy here."
There was still a way to keep contact underneath the table, and every now and again, she brushed her foot against his as she concentrated on her tray. Jyn hummed quietly, and her smile widened just a touch. This was never going to be perfect, but it's what they had. "I am. With you, I am."
He sat up and finished his lunch, downing what's left of his water.
Draven came up to them - well, mostly to Cassian. "Andor, I need to speak with you for a moment."
"Yes, sir," Cassian said, his expression steely. He got up and went to put away his dishes and tray to be washed before following Draven out of the cafeteria.
All too soon, he was pulled away, leaving Jyn to wonder what that was all about. For all she knew, she might never get the details, especially if it was something for Cassian's ears only. She knew she might have to get used to that, too.
She still had food to finish, and so, she took her time, hoping that he'd return before she found her way back at Medbay, offering her assistance on a more permanent basis.
Cassian reentered the cafeteria a few minutes later, finding Jyn still sitting at their spot. He went and sat down across from her. "Thank you for waiting," he said.
"Of course", she answered, offering the hint of a smile even as she watched him intently, looking for any sign of unease. Here probably wasn't the best place to ask anything, though, not with so many eyes and ears around. "We can leave, if you'd like. I'm finished."
"Okay," he said with a nod. There wasn't anything wrong, per se, just an update on that new droid. He got up and went with her to drop off her tray and dishes before leaving the cafeteria, heading back to their room.
That would be good to hear. Less worrisome, anyway. Usually when someone got pulled away like that, it meant something urgent. With the tray put away, it was easy enough to keep that respectable distance away on the walk back to the privacy of their quarters, every now and again nodding a greeting at a latecomer passing by.
